NASCAR Racing to Pacific Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 29, 2021) – The thrills of NASCAR Xfinity Series racing will stop at Portland International Raceway (PIR) on Saturday, June 4, 2022, bringing millions of dollars of economic impact. NASCAR and Green Savoree Racing Promotions officials jointly announced the race today along with representatives from the City of Portland, Travel Portland, and Sport Oregon.

Scott McLaughlin fell short of what he called his “overall” goal – he wanted to finish 12th in his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES season – but he achieved a consolation prize he very much valued. He earned the Rookie of the Year Award.

McLaughlin beat Romain Grosjean by 33 points as they finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in the standings.

“You get one shot to win this, and it’s a proud moment, regardless,” said McLaughlin, who became the first Team Penske driver to earn the award. “My ultimate goal was potentially top 12 (in the standings), top 10 in the championship – you always strive for more.

Alex Palou clinched his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship with a composed drive to fourth place Sunday in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, a race won by Colton Herta.

Palou became the first Spaniard to win an INDYCAR SERIES championship and is Chip Ganassi Racing’s second consecutive title winner and 14th INDYCAR SERIES champion overall. This is his first season with the powerhouse team in the No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, joining CGR after his rookie season in 2020, when he finished 16th in the standings.

The ARCA Menards Series West does not have deep roots at Portland International Raceway having competed on the 12-turn, 1.967-mile road course just five times dating back to 1986.

That doesn’t mean the site of IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Portland is not a popular stop on the West Series schedule.

The 2021 West Series event in Portland, Oregon, technically marks ARCA’s first race on this road course, as the first five West Series events at Portland International Raceway ran under the NASCAR banner.
